Martiros Sergeevich Saryan (1880-1972) - Armenian and Soviet landscape painter, graphic and theater artist. Academician of the USSR Academy of Arts (1947). People’s Artist of the USSR (1960). Hero of Socialist Labour (1965). Laureate of Lenin (1961) and Stalin Prizes of the second degree (1941). Martiros Saryan was born on February 28 (O.S. 16 February), 1880 to a patriarchal Armenian family in the city of Nakhichevan-on-Don (now part of Rostov-on-Don). In 1895 he graduated from the city school. From 1897 to 1904 he studied at the Moscow School of
Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, as well as in the workshops of V.A. Serov and K.A. Korovin. In 1901-1904 he undertook a trip to his historical homeland visiting Lori, Shirak, Echmiadzin, etc. In the 1900-s he participated in exhibitions of various art associations among which were «Blue Rose» and «Union of Russian Artists». In 1915 Saryan came to Echmiadzin to help refugees from Western Armenia. In 1916 in Tiflis he married Lusik Agayan. After the October Revolution of 1917, Saryan came to Russia with his family. In 1918-1919 he lived in New Nakhichevan. The artist became the initiator and the first director of the Armenian Regional Museum in Rostov-on-Don. In 1921, at the invitation of the chairman of People’s Commissars of Armenia Council A. Myasnikyan, he moved to Armenia. Since then, he has devoted his life to portraying its nature. Among his works are the creation of the coat of arms of Soviet Armenia and the design of the curtain of
the first Armenian state theater. The main theme of Saryan’s works in the 1930-s was the nature of Armenia. The artist also painted numerous portraits and vivid still lifes. Saryan worked both as a book graphic artist and as a theater artist. Saryan’s work played a leading role in the formation of the national school of Armenian painting. M. Saryan died on May 5, 1972 in Yerevan. He was buriedat the Komitas pantheon.
Մարտիրոս Սերգեյի Սարյան (1880-1972) - հայ խորհրդային գեղանկարիչ, գծանկարիչ և բեմանկարիչ: ԽՍՀՄ ԳԱ ակադեմիկոս (1947), ԽՍՀՄ ժողովրդական նկարիչ (1960), Սոցիալիստական Աշխատանքի Հերոս (1965), Լենինյան (1961) և Ստալինի երկրորդ աստիճանի մրցանակի դափնեկիր (1941): Ծնվել է 1880 թ․ փետրվարի 16-ին (28), Դոնի Նախիջևան քաղաքում (այժմ՝ Դոնի Ռոստով), Անիից Ղրիմ գաղթած, ապա այստեղ հաստատված հայերի ընտանիքում: 1895-ին ավարտել է քաղաքային հայերեն-ռուսերեն վարժարանը և 1897-1904 թթ. սովորել է Մոսկվայի Գեղանկարչության, քանդակագործության և ճարտարապետության ուսումնարանում, այդ թվում՝ Վ. Ա. Սերովի և Կ. Ա. Կորովինի արվեստանոցներում։ 1901-1904 թթ. այցելություն է նախաձեռնել պատմական հայրենիք, եղել է Լոռիում, Շիրակում, Էջմիածինում և այլուր: 1900-ականներին մասնակցել է "Կապույտ վարդ", "Ռուս նկարիչների միություն" և այլ գեղարվեստական միավորումների ցուցահանդեսներին:
1915-ին Սարյանը գալիս է Էջմիածին՝ օգնելու արևմտահայ փախստականներին։ 1916 թ. Թիֆլիսում ամուսնանում է Լուսիկ Ղազարոսի Աղայանի հետ։ 1917 թվականի Հոկտեմբերյան հեղափոխությունից հետո Սարյանն ընտանիքի հետ գալիս է Ռուսաստան։ 1918-1919 թթ. ապրում է Նոր Նախիջևանում։ Նկարիչը դառնում է Դոնի Ռոստովի հայկական երկրագիտական թանգարանի ստեղծողն ու առաջին տնօրենը: 1921 թ․ Ալ. Մյասնիկյանի հրավերով տեղափոխվում է Հայաստան և իր կյանքը նվիրում հայրենի բնության պատկերմանը։ Նա Խորհրդային Հայաստանի զինանշանի և առաջին հայկական պետական թատրոնի վարագույրի ձևավորման հեղինակն է։ 1930-ականներին Սարյանի ստեղծագործության գլխավոր թեման մնում է Հայաստանի բնությունը, նկարում է նաև բազմաթիվ դիմանկարներ և վառ նատյուրմորտներ։ Սարյանն աշխատել է նաև որպես գրքերի ձևավորող և բեմանկարիչ։
Մ.Ս. Սարյանի ստեղծագործությունը առաջատար դեր է խաղացել հայ գեղանկարչության ազգային դպրոցի կայացման գործում: Մահացել է 1972թ. մայիսի 5-ին Երևանում, թաղված է Կոմիտասի անվան Պանթեոնում:
